How to Create an Embroidered Sugar Skull:

  1. Prepare Your Materials:

Before you begin, trace the outline of a sugar skull onto muslin fabric using a pencil. Include the eyes, nose, mouth, and any decorative elements such as flowers and raindrops, similar to what you see in the image above.

  2. Organize Your Beads and Sequins:

Arrange all your beads and sequins in your workspace. Separate them by color and organize them neatly. This step will save you time when you start adding them to your project.

  3. Eyes of the Sugar Skull:

For the eyes, use large buttons in a vibrant color. Attach them to the skull using embroidery floss, placing one button on each side. After securing the buttons, outline the eyes with sequins and beads, filling in around the buttons to create a decorative effect.

  4. Teeth of the Sugar Skull:

Use white sequins to create the teeth. Place six sequins in a row for the top set of teeth and another six for the bottom set. You can either sew them on with embroidery floss or carefully glue them onto the fabric.

  5. Nose Decoration:

Select a contrasting bright color for the nose. Fill the upside-down heart shape completely with this color. To cover any pencil lines used for tracing, outline the nose with white embroidery floss.

  6. Decorate with Flowers and Raindrops:

Enhance the sugar skull with flower and raindrop decorations. Add flowers in the center of the skull and raindrops around it. Use embroidery floss to completely cover these shapes. Further embellish the design by adding more sequins and flowers around the skull's outline.

  7. Finishing Touches:

Once your embroidered sugar skull piece is complete, trim the excess fabric from your project. Use the embroidery hoop to frame your artwork, giving it a polished and finished look.
