DIY: Pour Painting Flower Pots

Decorate terracotta planters or pots with this cool painting technique so they look bright and fun!

I wanted to pour paint in terracotta pots since I saw this pin the other day. I finally got to do it and it was so much fun!

I painted a base color on all my terracotta pots first, and then I poured a hot pink paint layer on the top. The paint dripped and got everywhere making fun looking shapes. I really love the contrast between colors, so if you decide to try this for your garden, you should totally use contrasting colors so the layer on the top stands out.

One tip is to use a big plastic bag or lots of paper below the pots. When the paint drips it gets everywhere. It’s also good to add some rocks on the corners of the paper or something heavy to avoid the plastic or paper from flying around and messing up with the design before the paint dries. If that happens (I know because it happened to me!) it will make a mess so you will probably need to drip more paint to cover that on top.

MATERIALS:

  • Terracotta pots

  • Paint

  • Brushes

  • Plastic bag or newspaper to protect your work area

Because you need to drip a lot of paint if your terracotta planters are big, I recommend getting exterior paint samples from the home improvement store instead of using small bottles of acrylic paint. The paint will also last longer even with rain, dust or sunlight.

How to Drip Paint in a Pot or Planter:

  1. Prepare your work area. Cover your work area with plastic or lots of newspaper. Add some heavy items on the corners so the paper or plastic doesn’t move all around before your terra-cotta planters gets dry.

  2. Paint a base color. I really love the contrast between bright colors, so I wanted to add a layer of bright color first and then add the other layer of paint on top. I just feel like using contrasting colors the layer on the top stands out, but you can totally skip this step and just pour the paint on a plain terracotta planter. Wait a couple of hours until this layer dries.

  3. Drip paint on top of the terracotta planters. Place your terracotta planter upside down. Pour exterior paint in a plastic container first and then start dripping paint, preferably in a contrasting color on the top. You can go all around and then come back and add more paint. There is a time lapse video below where you can see how I added paint in mine.

Wait for a few hours until your planters or pots are dry.

This DIY project is fun and also so easy that I bet your kids would love to join and help.
