DIY: Easy Papel Picado with Kids

Create colorful papel picado with the kids using regular construction paper. So easy!

I've always wished that making papel picado could be simpler. Traditionally, it involves a chisel and hammer, but for this project—How to Make Halloween Papel Picado—I experimented with using a regular X-Acto knife instead.

This time, I wanted to share an incredibly easy method using construction paper, perfect even for little kids!

I was curious to see how well regular construction paper would work for this project, especially since tissue paper can sometimes be too challenging. I found that regular construction paper is just the right size and makes the process so straightforward, I promise.

MATERIALS:

How to Make Papel Picado with Construction Paper:

1. Fold the Paper

Start by folding the construction paper sheets three times.

2. Cut the Corners

Trim the two corners in a straight line.

3. Create a Design

Cut four triangles, two on each side of the folded paper.

4. Create a Design in the Center of the Paper

Fold the paper again and cut another triangle in the middle to create a rhombus (step 5).

6. Your design is Ready!

Open the construction paper sheet and your design will be ready!

This is just a way to create a simple design for the papel picado with the kids. You can try to cut different shapes on the corners and inside the construction paper and your design will look totally different.

It’s such an easy way to make papel picado with the kids, don’t you think?

I discovered that by using this easy pattern I could hang them easily. Just pass the thread in between some of the triangles.

Make lots of construction paper sheets in different colors, and hang them in your home like festive decorations.
